Group – B is the biggest executive central government job type. Most of the supervisory work is done by the employees of group B. In General, Central government employees of Group-B are Non-Gazetted but some of the posts are gazetted also. The basic difference between the non-gazetted and gazetted employees of the central government is that the former gazette employee can authorize the issuance of official government stamps whereas, non-gazetted cannot authorize. The Gazetted officers have a more administrative role. SSC –Staff Selection Commission takes a recruitment examination to recruit vacancies for Group B. However, for some posts, UPSC, and state PSC also recruit for Group B.
Some of the Group-B posts are of a Gazetted nature. The authority of a Group – B gazetted officer is similar to that of a Group – A officer. In order to start one’s career as a Group – B gazetted officer, one has to clear an exam of UPSC but most of these posts are filled through promotions bases. The officers in this Group – B are appointed by the Department Heads of any central government organization. The 7th Pay Commission has increased the pay level of Group B from 6 to 9. The Basic pay of Group-B government employees has been between Rs. 34500 to Rs 53100. Group B is the backbone of central government jobs. Preparation and Execution of most of the government action lie in the shoulder of this Group B of central government employees only. Group – C is the largest central government employee or staff. There are mostly supportive and non-supervisory jobs.
